24 September is a dark day in the history of humanity

Statement by the Executive Committee Abroad of the Iraq Freedom Congress

It was on this day in 2002 that the US government decided to wage its bloody war against the Iraqi people. Clearly, it was not enough for the US to kill and maim thousands of people in the first, 1990-1 Gulf War and 12 years of catastrophic economic sanctions were followed by the barbaric war launched in March 2003.

Since 1990, in addition to the brutality of Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraqi children, women and ordinary people have faced war, terror and the destruction of their homes, schools, hospitals and all kinds of social and economic infrastructure.

The people of Iraq have been brutalised so that the US can advance its goal of a New World Order. The occupation of Iraq has killed many thousands of civilians, and opened the way for the murder of thousands more by the various armed Islamist militias who are using the occupation as a golden opportunity to advance their reactionary cause.

The countless crimes of the occupation over the last three years have exposed the Iraqi people to violence of all kinds, sectarian civil war, the division of people into religious sects and ethnic-tribal gangs, the kidnapping of women, forced prostitution and the torture scandal at Abu Ghraib, to list just a few of numerous outrages.

Bush and Blair claimed that their war would bring freedom, security and welfare to the people of Iraq, but instead there is more violation of human rights, widespread terror, suicide bombings and ever more deaths.

The only hope lies in the civilised, progressive anti-occupation movements in Iraq and worldwide. The struggle of Iraqi workers and women are clearly visible as the only force capable both of undermining the occupation and preventing Iraq's regression to the dark ages.

In today’s Iraq, there is a wide mass movement stands against the occupation in a daily basis.   The Iraq Freedom Congress is trying to organise this movement for a brighter future for Iraq. The formation of the IFC provided a light at the end of the tunnel, to organise freedom-loving people in Iraq and across the world to fight for a society free from occupation, terror and violence.

Today, 24 September, we call on people across the world to support us and join the IFC in order to end the occupation and end the ongoing violence and terror in Iraq, uniting all our struggles against US militarism.

End the occupation now!
