Today, Hadi Almahdi was assassinated in cold blood outside his Baghdad home. Hadi Almahdi was an activist in the protest movement, which has been on going since 25th February 2011. The movement has been demanding freedom, unemployment benefit and services, fights against corruption, sectarianism and absences of basic rights.

His assassination has coincided with the preparation of organizing a large demonstration protesting against the government, in Altahrir Square in Baghdad. This barbaric act is, not only a warning messaging but also, an attempt at terrorising the protesting masses. The perpetrators mission was to silence one of the brave voices. However this act displays their narrow mindedness. They can attempt to silence a few voices but how can they possibly manage to silence millions who are seething with anger at the current situation?

Political assassination is an outdated and futile weapon. Such crimes will not dishearten the masses that are seeking a better life. As a result of this act, the masses are now even more determined to stand up against this corrupt government. Their aim is to replace it with a government that involves, provides and meets the demands of the masses, a government free of corruption, a government who considers meeting the demands of the masses as its first and foremost priority.

The assassination of Hadi Mahdi will only strengthen the determination of the masses and deepen their rage towards the sectarian and ethnocentric power of the bourgeoisie. This crime has brought forward the day society is freed from this fraudulent government, evident by it’s dark and bloody record. Clearly this government has not yet understood the lesson of Mubarak and Ben Ali. Freedom loving people of Iraq will show them the consequences of their actions.

The Worker-communist Party of Iraq, express its condolence to the family and friends of Hadi Almahdi, and stresses that the current government is extremely antagonist to the people and must immediately step down. It is up to the working class and freedom loving and in particular those demonstrate against this sectarian and ethnocentric government, on 9th September 2011, to step up the struggle to end the ominous life of this government.
